Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh
Series: Psy-Changling #1
Published: September 5, 2006
Genre: Paranormal Romance
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation” – the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was…
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion – and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities – or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation.
I always love to pick up a Romance novel when trying to get over a major book-hangover (and there are none as large as those following a Sarah J. Maas book). What better book to pick up than one suggested by the Queen herself? Maas often lists some of her favorite reads in her newsletters and in the last one she mentioned Nalini Singh. As a lover of all smutty romances–especially those of the paranormal/sci-fi variety–I had to check this author out.
As with the first book in all paranormal/fantasy books, a good deal of page space is dedicated to world building and explaining the intricate relationships between species. This is one of the main reasons that I gave this book 4 stars. While I always enjoy diving into a new world, and Singh did descriptions fairly well, there seemed to be quite a few descriptions that took a little away from the story.
Lucas is a hot hunk that I had no trouble falling for him. The dance between Sascha and him was very amusing to read although the collapse from tension into love did seem a bit sudden. Any book with mating does seem to go this way, and it did not detract from my overall enjoyment. Who wouldn’t want a hot male connected to you? (unless they’re super creepy of course)
Overall a satisfying read that I devoured in a day. It did it’s job of assisting me out of the reading slump. I will definitely be checking out the other books in the series, as this world is very addictive. Can’t wait to find out more about the other characters that were introduced as well as the world of the Psy and Changelings!
Thanks for reading,
